Resident Evil 6 is double the length of RE5

If you thought Resident Evil 5 was long, get ready to put at least twice the amount of time in Resident Evil 6. The single player experience is split into three separate campaigns, each of which will crossover throughout the individual stories. You'll play as Leon Kennedy, Chris Redfield, and Jake Muller - each with different playstyles.

Here's the catch: each individual campaign is "probably around 70% to 80% of the volume of the whole game in Resident Evil 5."

"So with three separate storylines, there’s plenty to play here," producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told Sony.

Holy crap that's long, especially when one of Resident Evil 5's biggest criticisms was that it was much longer than it needed to be. Who knows, maybe the variety in characters and stories will justify the added length. If that's not long enough to keep you satisfied, Resident Evil 6 will also have added DLC, though it will be available on Xbox 360 first.

While some may be upset, I applaud Capcom. If I'm going to drop $60 on a game, I want it to last me a while. I'm not saying drag it out just for some gameplay hours, but if it offers a compelling story, then I see no reason to complain here.

Dragon's Dogma sold only 92,000 copies last month

Dragon's Dogma

Capcom's Dragon's Dogma was the ninth best-selling game in May, according to the NPD Group sales report.

NPD's Anita Frazier confirmed that the game sold only 92,000 copies last month, although its May 22 release date means that the report compensates for only five days of data (it covers sales from April 29 to May 26).

By comparison, the game pushed over 300,000 copies in its opening week in Japan, so the US has been less fruitful for the joint publisher/developer. Capcom hopes to sell 1.5 million copies of Dragon’s Dogma by the close of March 2013, which may be overreaching given the current numbers.

However, in a statement released to investors last month, Capcom reiterated their pledge to create new brands, even while realizing that they might not be hits upon first release due to low brand awareness.

Blizzard's Diablo III, which came out May 15, took the number one spot last month in sales.

Warren Spector speaks out against the 'ultraviolence' in games

Warren Spector

Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector believes we're too focused on violence in video games.

"The ultraviolence has to stop," he told GI.biz. "We have to stop loving it. I just don't believe in the effects argument at all, but I do believe that we are fetishizing violence, and now in some cases actually combining it with an adolescent approach to sexuality. I just think it's in bad taste. Ultimately I think it will cause us trouble."

Spector said he left Eidos in 2004 because of the overwhelming theme of violence he noticed in the company's line-up.

"We've gone too far," he said. "You know, Deus Ex had its moments of violence, but they were designed — whether they succeeded or not I can't say — but they were designed to make you uncomfortable, and I don't see that happening now. I think we're just appealing to an adolescent mindset and calling it mature."

The industry veteran also noticed an emphasis on Netflix and other non-gaming interfaces at E3 this year.

"When the games are the least interesting part, there's a problem," he said.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two launch date announced

Dynamic Disney duo Mickey and Oswald will be returning to the U.S. on November 18, 2012. Disney Interactive finally announced a release date for the much anticipated sequel Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

The sequel to the popular Wii-exclusive will arrive in the U.K. on November 23, 2012.

“Our fans have told us how eager they are for a sequel to Disney Epic Mickey and I’m happy to be able to reveal the launch date for Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two,” said Junction Point creative director and vice president Warren Spector. “I think players are going to be excited by the new areas of the game being revealed at E3 where they will need to determine who their friends really are as they team up Mickey Mouse and Oswald to restore balance in Wasteland.”

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two takes what the original game did and improves upon it adding split-screen drop-in/drop-out co-op, fully voiced-over characters, original songs, and better control over the game's cameras (a big complaint about the first game).

Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two returns Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Wasteland, an alternate world filled with more than 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions.  But for the first time, Mickey and Oswald will join forces as true partners - Mickey with the magical paint brush that allows him to wield paint and thinner, and Oswald with a powerful remote control that allows him to command electricity. It will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo Wii.

Mass Effect 3 'Earth', 'Extended Cut' DLC rumored

Reddit user derptemp6698, the same person who accurately detailed Mass Effect 3's Rebellion Pack weeks ahead of its official announcement, has made new claims surrounding the next DLC add-on, Mass Effect 3: Earth.  Although he offers no citation, he claims the DLC will introduce new gear, weapons and maps for Rio, Vancouver, and London.

derptemp6698 writes:

The fighting is fiercest when it's your home at stake! Mass Effect 3™: Earth adds mods, gear, and new maps for Rio, Vancouver, and London. It features 3 new weapons: Piranha assault shotgun, Acolyte pistol, and Typhoon light machine gun. Six new human N7 classes are also available: Destroyer, Paladin, Demolisher, Slayer, Shadow, and Fury!

The tipsters also mentioned Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut - free DLC designed to provide "closure" to the sharply critisized ending - although he really didn't share any information we didn't already know.

An expanded ending for Mass Effect 3. Additional scenes and an extended epilogue reveal the impact of Shepard's choices on the future of the galaxy.

Extended Cut, announced back in April, is BioWare's response to fan outcry over the ending of Mass Effect 3. It will not be a re-imagining of the endings or a new ending. The end goal is to give players a sense of "personalization with the endings", BioWare originally said.

Unfortunately, derptemp6698 indicated no release date for either add-on, but did note that they are separate expansion.

Watch Dogs releasing in 2013 on PC and 'consoles'

Ubisoft's sandbox action game Watch Dogs, which was revealed last week at E3 and arguably stole the show, could be releasing in 2013. Ubisoft posted, then removed the tweet confirming the 2013 release date, likely in an attempt to steer clear of speculation.

During the gameplay demo, there was no mention of a release window or platform. In the same tweet, it was stated that Watch Dogs would be released on PC and "consoles". This, of course, paves the way for rumors surrounding the game's next-gen possibilities. If you had seen the gameplay you could make a case that Watch Dogs is a next-gen game, possibly arriving on the PS4 and Xbox 720, which could be why no platforms were stated.

Aside from the stellar gameplay and compelling idea, the graphics looked stunning. The textures, reflections, and models were all impressive and when time was slowed down you could literally see each individual raindrop bouncing off the surface. While the demo was likely shown off the PC, it's still hard to fathom the aging Xbox 360 or PS3 capable of reproducing something similar.

The tweet has since been removed, but not before GameTrailers captured a screenshot.

Watch Dogs is an open-world action-adventure that "blends cutting-edge technologies and sophisticated game design into a realistic and living open world where players must use any means at their disposal to take down a corrupt system." Watch Dogs enters the dangerous world of Aiden Pearce, a "new class of antihero" who has the ability to hack into any connected electronic system.  It's a game that focuses on the concept that all people can be identified and tracked based on their electronic interactions, be it through the internet or their cell phones.

Ready for PS4 and Xbox 720? Dead Island: Riptide price 'reflects end of console cycle'

Although Dead Island: Riptide will release for Xbox 360 and PS3, its lower-than-standard price point could indicate the end of the current console generation.

When asked about the game's $49.99 price point when it launches, Deep Silver marketing and PR manager Aubrey Norris confirmed the publisher's belief that the PS4 and Xbox 720 will be close to release by the time the game arrives, likely some time next year.  For that reason, Deep Silver believes the $49.99 price "makes a lot more sense".

"That's not a placeholder :) that's the real price!" she told Ripten when contacted about retailer listings for the game. "It's the end of a console cycle - we think this price makes a lot more sense given that."

Norris also confirmed that Dead Island: Riptide is a new game and not a remake in a similar fashion to Dead Rising 2: Off the Record.

Dead Island: Riptide is planned for release on PC and current-gen consoles. Although it was announced during E3, a more extensive reveal is lined up for this summer.

Who knows, maybe this new price could indicate a change in the overall pricing for the entire game industry. Last July, EA Sports boss Andrew Wilson suggested the days of the $60 games business could be numbered, noting that 45% of revenues made by games in 2010 were digital.

At the same time, it's also possible that Deep Silver is just saying this rather than admitting the lower price is an attempt to help boost sales for a game that many may be hesitant to pick up, possibly due to the somewhat disappointing launch of Dead Island.

Ubisoft planning to 'annualize' Assassin's Creed franchise

Ubisoft's successful Assassin's Creed franchise could be getting the Call of Duty treatment.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Ubisoft North America executive director Laurent Detoc suggested the idea of "annualizing" the franchise meaning we could possibly see a tenth installment to the Assassin's Creed series.

"I hope we will," Detoc responded to the idea of creating possibly an eighth, ninth, or even tenth installment.

"I also hope we'll be able to branch out from within the franchise. It's very simple to me: There's no such thing as not being able to annualize a franchise. If it's good, people will come."

That seems to be Activision's approach with Call of Duty which is now set to release the ninth installment later this year. In one sense, Detoc is correct in that people will come to a good franchise. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 received rave reviews and reached record-breaking sales numbers.

With that being said, Ubisoft has to be careful with their approach in annualizing Assassin's Creed. Despite the success of Modern Warfare 3, many fans were disappointed in the most recent release. Unless companies make significant changes to the gameplay or introduce a unique feature, the annualization of games can lead to stale gameplay and eventually less sales - which is actually what I predict will happen to Call of Duty.

Ubisoft seems to be off to a good start with Assassin's Creed 3 impressing many at E3 with not only a new setting and character, but with stunning visuals and gameplay that consists of brutal executions. If Ubisoft can continue to make the strides with future installments that they have with Assassin's Creed 3, then I'm all for new titles for the franchise. The key is to not fall into the success lull that hurts so many sequels.

Where was Rainbow 6: Patriots during E3?

Ubisoft had an impressive run this year at E3, showing off titles like Assassin's Creed III, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Watch Dogs but one fan favorite was missing. Tom Clany's Rainbow 6: Patriots didn't make its way into E3 this year and we can only help but wonder why.

Tony Key, Ubisoft senior vice president of sales, sat down with IGN to explain why Rainbow 6 was missing in action. “Let's just say that Rainbow 6 is still in active development but what we decided was that the best thing for the brand was to not bring it to the show right now."

With Ubisoft's already heavy E3 lineup they didn't want to overwhelm people with too many games.“We have a lot of other games that we want to focus people on and there will be more information on Rainbow coming," said Key.

Last December Ubisoft released a trailer that showed modern-day terrorists attempting to assume control. Even with the delay Rainbow 6: Patriots will be on current generation consoles.

"This is the only generation that I know about, so I would assume yes."

It is assumed that Rainbow 6: Patriots will be available in 2013 but no specific date has been confirmed.

Tomb Raider team comments on 'rape' scenes in the E3 trailer

Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher and game producer Ron Rosenberg expressed their views on reactions to the violent Tomb Raider trailer shown at E3.

In one part of the video, Lara appears to be fending off a would-be raper, kneeing him in the groin and struggling to shoot him when he pins her to the ground.

“To actually see what she goes through, to become hardened, to become this tomb raider than we know and love, or at least a new version of it," Gallagher told the Penny Arcade Report. "A big part of that journey is seeing some of the hits she’s taken along the way and why she had to get that inner strength and the inner core to become the woman that we all know. There is that sense of seeing it and being explicit about that. It’s part of the narrative.”

Rosenberg explained that the emphasis on Lara's suffering was intentional — and that their research into survivors of extreme situations revealed a common mantra: keep moving.

“You see that in the beginning of the game, where we begin to build her up and give her confidence to cross the ledge, cross the plane, she forages for food and she’s feeling really successful," Rosenberg said. "Then towards the end we start to really hit her, and to break her down. Her best friend is kidnapped, she’s taken hostage, she’s almost raped, we put her in this position where we turned her into a cornered animal.”

Tomb Raider, scheduled for release on March 5 of next year, is better considered as a reboot than a prequel. The Lara Croft that we've seen before is not necessarily the one we'll know by the end of the new game.

“They share many traits so you can recognize the iconography, it’s the same character, but it’s a more modern version," said Gallagher. "It doesn’t necessarily lead directly into Tomb Raider 1, with hot pants and a braid.”

The Vita bundle will include a "crystal white" version of the handheld (Wi-fi only, not 3G), the game disc for Liberation, and a 4GB memory card. For PS3, the box will contain a 320GB console and one controller, a copy of Assassin's Creed III, and unspecified exclusive DLC.

“When you link [the games], you will unlock Connor’s tomahawk, an exclusive character skin, a multiplayer character, and a complete upgrade of ammunition pouches,” said Jack Tretton, SCEA’s chief executive.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation takes place in 18th-century Louisiana and stars Aveline, the first-ever female assassin in the series. She must confront the Spanish forces that threaten to invade while the rest of the coastal colonies are battling in the American Revolution. Aveline descends from African and French lineage and uses weapons such as a machete, poison-dart blowpipe, and dueling pistols.

Become the ultimate hunter in Crysis 3

Publisher EA and developer Crytek will release the first-person shooter Crysis 3 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in February 2013.

Players assume the role of "Prophet" as he returns to New York, only to find that the Cell Corporation has encased it in a Nanodome. Seven distinct environments within the Liberty Dome become known as the Seven Wonders, and Prophet will need to use his composite bow, enhanced Nanosuit, and alien tech to survive.

The game uses CryEngine 3 — which the studio used to power Crysis 2 and bring the original game to consoles.

Tod Blystad apologizes for Hitman: Absolution trailer offense

Video games and movies are pushing boundaries more than ever and when it came to the Hitman: Absolution trailer, apparently they pushed a little bit too far. In an interview with Gamasutra the IO interactive game director, Tore Blystad, didn't think that anyone would think too much of their game trailer.

"It was kind of a shock to us back in Copenhagen when we got the response to that trailer," said Blystad "We honestly didn't mean to offend anyone, this is a game that has its roots in a kind of cartoony extreme universe." He went on to say that throughout the Hitman games Agent 47 wore disguises so they hadn't thought much of the female assassins dressed as sexy nuns.

Blystad did say that the trailer depicted an actual level in the game. The level has multiple outcomes, the trailer simply highlighted what one of the outcomes could be. Hitman games have always been "centered around choice" so really, any level play can out to how the player chooses to play.

The Hitman team never meant any offense when they released the trailer but do apologize to those they did offend. If you didn't see the trailer and don't plan on it, here are the offenders.

I hope I didn't offend you!
